If you’re looking for a spoof comedy performances in an intimate setting that delivers liveliness, exceptional talent, and energetic entertainment straight into your lap for a few hours, Desert Star Playhouse in Murray, Utah is the place to go. The building itself stands out proudly, and for good reason. Built in the Art Deco style, it’s a one-of-a-kind structure with deep roots in the valley’s entertainment history. Back in the 1940s, when the old Irish theater would close during the summer months, crowds would migrate to the cooler Murray theater down the street. The founders themselves first began producing shows at Heritage Park before eventually finding their permanent home in the closed-down Vista Theater, and what a home it is. Inside, remnants of the Old West weave seamlessly into wall-themed theatrics and photos from the past. Everything carries a western flair without ever feeling like a gimmick. It’s charming, intentional, and completely its own. What I’ve noticed about Desert Star Playhouse over the years is that some shows are exceptional, pulling you in and keeping you laughing from start to finish, while others can run a bit slow. It can be a hit or miss experience depending on the production. That said, if you happen to catch a slower show, please give it another shot. Because regardless of what you think of any given performance, I would be genuinely surprised if you walked away unimpressed with the talent. The performers here are always exceptional. That part never misses. Now, the seating. It’s tight. The venue has a cramped layout, and seat selection matters more here than most places. From my experience, the second through fourth sections back from the stage tend to offer the best sightlines and the most legroom. I’d avoid the first tables on the side sections, as the wait staff will be navigating past you throughout the show, and you may find yourself being asked to shift your seat more than once. It’s the one consistent complaint I’ve had, and honestly, the only one I’ve ever heard about this place. A redesign of the seating arrangement someday would go a long way. The food is excellent and ties in well with the overall experience. The staff is attentive and on top of things throughout the show. I love their pizza. Actually, I love all of their food. And even though I wish they offered a few more flavors, their burnt almond fudge is worth saving room for. The live piano from start to finish is a treat that enhances every moment on stage. Audience engagement is fun and kept to a minimum. In all my years of going, I’ve only seen them pull someone up on stage twice, so if you’re shy, you can relax. You will, however, be cheering and booing your way through the show. There’s always a villain, and that never gets old. Desert Star Playhouse is a Valley gem. Cramped seats and all, it earns its place as one of the most entertaining and unique nights out you can have in the Salt Lake Valley.
